In a heartfelt Instagram post on Friday, Gascón addressed director Jacques Audiard’s recent interview, where he confirmed cutting ties with her.
“Following Jacques’ interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself,” she wrote. “I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way.”
Director Jacques Audiard Speaks Out
Earlier this week, Audiard told Deadline Hollywood that he has no plans to reconnect with Gascón.
“I haven’t spoken to her, and I don’t want to,” he stated. “She is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in… Why is she harming herself? Why is she harming people who were very close to her?”
The Controversy and Its Fallout
Gascón, the first openly transgender performer nominated for an acting Oscar, has faced backlash over offensive social media posts from years ago. She has since apologized multiple times, including in a recent interview with CNN en Español, where she defended herself against accusations of racism, antisemitism, and xenophobia.
However, the controversy has had significant consequences. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Netflix, which holds Emilia Pérez’s distribution rights in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., has removed Gascón from the film’s Oscar campaign. She will no longer travel to Los Angeles for awards season events.
With the Oscars approaching, Emilia Pérez remains in the spotlight, but Gascón’s absence adds a layer of tension to the film’s journey. Whether her silence will allow the film to shine on its own remains to be seen.
