A Packed Week Canceled
Gascón was scheduled to attend major events, including the AFI Awards luncheon on Feb. 6, the Critics Choice Awards on Feb. 7, and the Producers Guild Awards (PGA) on Feb. 8, where she was set to present an award. She was also supposed to be honored at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on Feb. 9. However, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that she will no longer be traveling to Los Angeles.
Netflix Distances Itself
Netflix, which owns Emilia Pérez’s distribution rights in the U.S., Canada, and the UK, has reportedly cut off direct communication with Gascón. The streaming giant has been heavily invested in the film’s awards campaign, especially after its record-breaking 13 Oscar nominations. However, the controversy has led to tensions, with Netflix now only engaging with Gascón through her agent, Jeremy Barber of UTA.
Additionally, Gascón has been removed from promotional materials, including email campaigns and ad reads, while billboards featuring her are being updated to highlight other cast members instead.
Industry Fallout
Gascón’s absence appears to be a strategic move to avoid further controversy, especially as other attendees at the Santa Barbara Film Festival reportedly considered withdrawing if she remained on the lineup. Netflix is also focused on protecting Emilia Pérez’s other nominees, particularly Zoe Saldaña, a frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress.
Despite the Hollywood fallout, Gascón may still attend the Goya Awards in Spain, where her actions are not as controversial. With final Oscar voting set to begin on Feb. 11, all eyes are on how Emilia Pérez’s campaign will recover—and whether its remaining stars will address Gascón’s absence during upcoming award ceremonies.
