The two actors famously feuded during their time working on the Fast & Furious franchise. The conflict first came to light in 2016, when Johnson posted on Instagram, referring to an unnamed co-star as a “chicken shit” and “candy ass.” It was later revealed that Johnson was talking about Diesel. Diesel addressed the feud in a 2021 Men’s Health interview, explaining that his "tough love" approach toward Johnson on set was intended to draw out the best performance for Johnson’s character, Luke Hobbs.
“It was a tough character to embody,” Diesel said at the time. “I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything I’d have to do in order to get performances in anything I’m producing.”
Despite their public differences, the two actors officially mended their relationship in 2023, surprising fans when Johnson reprised his role as Hobbs in a mid-credits scene in Fast X. The appearance set the stage for Johnson’s return in the upcoming 11th installment of the Fast & Furious franchise.
In 2021, Diesel had extended an invitation for Johnson to join Fast X, which Johnson initially declined, saying, “I would not be returning to the franchise.” However, their reconciliation took place during the summer of 2022, as Johnson later shared on Twitter: “Last summer, Vin and I put all the past behind us. We’ll lead with brotherhood and resolve — and always take care of the franchise, characters & FANS that we love.”
The pair’s on-set clashes were also discussed by co-star John Cena during a 2024 episode of the Armchair Expert podcast. Addressing the rumors, Cena remarked, “You have two very alpha, driven people. You get two, there can only be one.”
