Authorities say the dispute began in their car after leaving the New York-New York Hotel and Casino. Maloney, who was reportedly intoxicated, became frustrated when his fiancée repeatedly asked if he had her jacket. In response, he allegedly insulted her before grabbing a handgun from the glove compartment and exiting the vehicle.
His fiancée told police she soon heard a gunshot and called out for him, only to see him walking away. As she chased after him, a second shot rang out, and she watched him collapse with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Surveillance footage from two nearby casinos, the MGM Grand and New York-New York, captured the tragic moment. Maloney had even posted a video from the latter location on Instagram the night before his death.
The police report also revealed that Maloney had a history of self-harm and had previously contemplated suicide.
Maloney gained national recognition in 2014 when he competed on The Voice Season 6. His blind audition performance of Journey’s Lights earned him a spot on Blake Shelton’s team.
Authorities confirmed that Maloney was pronounced dead at the scene after his fiancée called 911.
