The campaign, initially seeking $60,000, has already raised over $176,000. In her post, Moore explained the urgency of their situation: “Yesterday, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law Griff & Kit lost their home and everything they own in the Eaton Fire. With their first baby on the way in a matter of weeks, they need our support now more than ever.” She added that Griff, a touring musician, also lost his entire collection of drums and percussion equipment, vital to his livelihood.
However, Moore’s decision to share the campaign sparked backlash online. Critics argued that the actress, reportedly worth $14 million according to Celebrity Net Worth, should fund the recovery herself instead of seeking public donations.
Moore clapped back in the comments, defending her actions: “People questioning whether we’re helping out our own family or attributing some arbitrary amount of money Google says someone has is NOT helpful or empathetic. Of course we are. Our buddy Matt started this GoFundMe and I’m sharing because people have asked how they can help them. We just lost most of our life in a fire too. Kindly F OFF. No one is forcing you to do anything.”
Moore is not alone in her loss. Other stars, including Billy Crystal, Miles Teller, Paris Hilton, Jeff Bridges, and her "This Is Us" co-star Milo Ventimiglia, also lost their homes in the devastating fires. Ventimiglia spoke with CBS News, visibly emotional, saying, “[It’s] heavy. You start thinking about all the memories in different parts of the house, and then you see your neighbors’ houses and everything kind of around, and your heart just breaks.”
The L.A. fires have left countless families—celebrity and non-celebrity alike—grappling with immense loss, reminding us of the indiscriminate nature of such tragedies.
