Liza Minnelli Reflects on Love and Marriage in New Documentary

Legendary entertainer Liza Minnelli opens up about her four marriages in the documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and is now playing in select theaters.

Minnelli’s first marriage to Australian performer Peter Allen, from 1967 to 1974, takes center stage in the film. Friends and family reveal that while the marriage seemed promising, it was doomed due to Allen's sexuality. “The happiest I saw her in her private life was with Peter Allen,” says Mia Farrow, a lifelong friend.

Minnelli herself reflects on Allen’s charm. “Peter was hilarious, so much fun, and incredible on stage,” she shares. Despite their connection, Minnelli was devastated upon discovering Allen with another man. “People ask, ‘How could she not know?’ She didn’t,” says Michael Feinstein, another close friend.

The documentary also touches on her second marriage to Jack Haley Jr., son of The Wizard of Oz star Jack Haley. Married from 1974 to 1979, they shared a unique bond due to their Hollywood roots. Feinstein describes them as a “perfect match,” though Farrow disagrees. “I didn’t think Jack was a good match for her,” she admits.

Minnelli’s third marriage to sculptor Mark Gero lasted from 1979 to 1992. Her fourth and most publicized union with David Gest in 2002 ended in a dramatic divorce. Farrow, who attended the wedding, reflects, “That last husband of hers... Oh my God!”

The documentary offers humor and heart as Minnelli looks back at her journey, even joking about her love life: “Give me a gay break!” Yet, it also reveals her resilience in navigating love, loss, and self-discovery.
