"Happy New Year blessings to you all...," Renner wrote. "Ringing in my second 'ReBirthday' today." He continued by thanking the "army of people" who worked tirelessly to put him back together. "Thank you to each and every nurse, doctor, first responder… I literally owe you my life," he said.
Renner also expressed heartfelt thanks to his nephew Alex Fries and his neighbors, Rich Kovach and Barb Fletcher, who came to his aid during the accident. "All my heart goes out to my beautiful, brave nephew and the angels who jumped to my aid and endured the chaos for 45 long minutes on the icy asphalt," he wrote.
The actor suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck and crushed by a seven-ton snowplow near his Reno compound on January 1, 2023. The incident occurred as Renner tried to clear snow and tow his car, which had become stuck on an icy road following a blizzard. As he tried to help his nephew, Renner fell out of the plow, and in an effort to prevent it from rolling into Fries, he was caught under the vehicle.
His nephew and neighbors worked to keep him alive until paramedics arrived. Renner sustained a collapsed lung, a lacerated liver, and over 30 broken bones. Despite the critical injuries, Renner was determined to survive. "I chose to survive," he told Diane Sawyer in a post-accident interview.
After two weeks in the hospital, Renner began the long road to recovery. He spent a month unable to get out of bed and had to relearn how to walk.
In his Instagram post, Renner ended with a message of gratitude and hope: "More Open. More Loved. More Connected. And f—--- BLESSED to take my next step, to take MY NEXT BREATH. Thank you with every fiber and cell in my body. I love you ALL ❤️"
