In her post, Smart wrote, "Attention! With ALL due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters."
Smart, who has 159,000 followers on Instagram, did not mention specific events, but her message likely targets high-profile awards like the Academy Awards, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards—events set to air on ABC, E! Network, and Netflix, respectively.
The fires have already disrupted Hollywood's awards season. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) had to cancel their live nominations announcement, opting to release the nominees via a press release. Additionally, the Academy Awards, which began accepting votes on January 8, extended their voting deadline from January 12 to January 14. The Critics Choice Awards, originally scheduled for January 12, have been postponed to January 26.
Other events, such as film premieres for The Last Showgirl, Wolf Man, and Unstoppable, have also been canceled, while gatherings like the BAFTA Tea Party, AFI Awards luncheon, and AARP’s Movies for Grownups have been delayed.
As Los Angeles faces these challenging times, Jean Smart’s call for support highlights the importance of giving back to those impacted by the fires.
