Jane Fonda, 87, Shares Secrets to Staying Fit: “I Do Everything I Used to Do, Just Slower”

Jane Fonda has always been a fitness icon, and at 87, she’s proving age is just a number. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the legendary actress revealed that her approach to fitness hasn’t changed much — just the pace.

"I essentially do everything I used to do, just slower," Fonda shared. Once an avid runner, she now enjoys walking, particularly in the woods and on hills. "I love being outdoors," she added.

To keep things interesting, Fonda mixes up her routine. "I work out every day, alternating between upper and lower body strength exercises, and always include cardio," she explained. Walking outdoors remains one of her favorite ways to stay active.

Fonda’s love for fitness dates back to the 1980s, when her Jane Fonda's Workout tapes became a worldwide sensation. "I had no idea my videos would become such a phenomenon," she said. Fonda recalled receiving letters from women across the globe who felt empowered by her exercises, including one Peace Corps volunteer who worked out in a mud hut in Guatemala.

Now, Fonda is embracing cutting-edge fitness technology with a new partnership with Supernatural, a virtual reality (VR) fitness platform on Meta Quest. The collaboration features a four-part series of VR classes, including Flow with Jane Fonda, Box with Jane Fonda & Ludacris, Jane Fonda: Stretching, and Jane Fonda: Team Workout.

"Going from VHS to VR was surprisingly easy," Fonda said. "It feels like we’ve bridged the past and future of fitness." She highlighted the importance of music in her workouts, noting that an upbeat playlist and a positive attitude are essential for a great session.

For Fonda, fitness isn’t just about staying in shape. "It’s a big part of my life," she said. "To do it with today’s technology feels like a full-circle moment."

At 87, Jane Fonda remains a trailblazer, proving that fitness and innovation can go hand in hand at any age.
