During the Weekend Update segment, Jost found himself delivering jokes written by his co-host, Michael Che, that humorously targeted Johansson. The Avengers star, who recently turned 40, watched backstage as the jokes unfolded.
Appearing on The Tonight Show on January 20, Jost opened up to host Jimmy Fallon about the experience. When asked if he got into trouble with Johansson, Jost joked, “I’m in trouble, I think, with a lot of people. Scarlett was genuinely so shocked.”
Jost shared that while he wasn’t aware of the jokes in advance, the SNL team had given Johansson a heads-up, including a warning about an R-rated joke involving her. “They were like, ‘Would you be okay if Michael made a little, like, kind of vagina joke?’” Jost explained. “She was like, ‘Sure, whatever, I’m open to it.’”
The moment took a comedic turn when a photo of a Costco roast beef sandwich appeared on-screen during the show. “Scarlett was backstage like, ‘Oh my god, that’s what it is!’” Jost recalled, admitting that his reaction on-air was entirely real.
The joke-swapping tradition between Jost and Che is a fan-favorite segment, and this year, the spotlight was firmly on Johansson. One memorable joke had Jost reading, “Hey, boo, y’all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday, which means, I’m about to get up out of there.”
The couple, who married in 2020, share a 3-year-old son, Cosmo. Johansson also has a daughter, Rose, from her previous marriage to Romain Dauriac.
Despite the playful roasting, Johansson has nothing but praise for her husband. “He’s a very great guy. I’m extremely lucky,” she said in a November 2024 interview. “He’s kind, hilarious, thoughtful, loving, and a great dad. But he’s also got his naughty side. He keeps it interesting.”
Clearly, humor and love are the perfect mix for this celebrity couple.
