On a recent episode of the MeSsy podcast with her friend Jamie-Lynn Sigler, the four-time Golden Globe nominee addressed the growing narrative targeting Los Angeles and its residents.
“You know what I have words for? F—ing people who are saying that it’s, you know, good. ‘It’s Hollywood and those stupid Hollywood people’ — like, you’ve gotta be kidding me,” Applegate said.
She went on to highlight the diversity of Los Angeles, pointing out that many hardworking individuals—not just celebrities—call the city home. “This is a city of people that are working their asses off at fast food chains or, you know, builders and painters. It’s a myriad of groups of humans here. So to say ‘good riddance’ is real sick, and I’m not liking that whatsoever.”
Sigler echoed Applegate’s sentiments, emphasizing that while some people may have the resources to rebuild their lives, many others face an uncertain future. “We have to hold both of them in our hearts,” she added.
Wildfire Chaos and Celebrity Losses
The wildfires, intensified by a “life-threatening and destructive” windstorm, have swept through areas like Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and the Hollywood Hills, leaving a trail of destruction. Notable celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Milo Ventimiglia, Adam Brody, and Billy Crystal, have reportedly lost their homes.
So far, at least 25 lives have been lost, with over 105,000 people forced to evacuate. Amid the chaos, authorities have made 44 arrests for crimes such as arson, burglary, and curfew violations.
Applegate, who spent two nights under evacuation with her family, shared that they’ve since returned home but remain on high alert. “Right now, we’re OK,” she said. “Just giving our thoughts out to anyone who’s lost homes, people that I’ve known who have lost their homes and are displaced.”
Federal Response to the Crisis
In response to the escalating crisis, President Joe Biden extended his trip to Los Angeles to meet with first responders and affected residents. He declared the wildfires a major disaster, ensuring federal aid would cover 100% of the costs for disaster relief efforts.
As firefighters continue their battle to contain the inferno, voices like Applegate’s remind us of the shared humanity in the face of such tragedy. “This is about more than just a city. It’s about people and their lives,” she said.
