Billie Eilish Opens Up About Body Image, Extreme Dieting, and New Music

Billie Eilish has spoken candidly about the dangers of extreme dieting and her struggles with body image during an interview on NPR’s Fresh Air podcast. The Grammy-winning artist shared that her attempt to control her weight in the past left her deeply unhappy.

“A couple of years back, I was thinner and stronger than ever,” Eilish said. “But I was extremely unhappy and unaware of how unhappy I was. It’s not a fun way to live.”

The Hit Me Hard And Soft singer has been open about her journey with body image issues. In 2019, she revealed that a hip injury during her teens led to depression and a phase of self-harm. Reflecting on her struggles, she explained, “I felt like my body was gaslighting me for years. I had to realize that my body is actually me—it’s not out to get me.”

Eilish has often used her platform to challenge beauty standards. In a 2021 Vogue cover shoot, she faced criticism for debuting a new look, which some interpreted as a “sellout” from her signature baggy clothes. Addressing these opinions, she said, “Nobody can have an opinion because they don’t know what’s underneath. It’s such a loss to always try to look good—it takes away joy and freedom.”

On Tour and New Music

Eilish recently wrapped up the US leg of her Hit Me Hard And Soft tour with a series of sold-out performances at Inglewood’s Kia Forum. During one show, she surprised fans by bringing out Charli XCX to perform their Grammy-nominated track Guess.

Both artists are competing in major Grammy categories, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Eilish also teased fans with snippets of two new songs during a recent interview, confirming she’s back in the studio.

Her track Birds of a Feather was named the 12th best song of 2024 by NME, while her album Hit Me Hard And Soft secured the ninth spot on their Best Albums of 2024 list.

With her honest reflections and creative momentum, Eilish continues to inspire fans around the world.
