The event, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, saw numerous celebrities in attendance for its 82nd ceremony. Plaza was originally set to present an award, but her absence was understandable given the circumstances. It remains unclear who stepped in for her role.
On Friday morning, Baena was found unresponsive at a Los Angeles-area home. Authorities have ruled his death a suicide. The acclaimed filmmaker was known for his work on projects like Life After Beth, Horse Girl, and the cult favorite I Heart Huckabees, which he co-wrote.
Actress Molly Shannon honored Baena on social media, sharing photos of them together with a broken-heart emoji. He was also mentioned during the ceremony, as The Brutalist director Brady Corbet acknowledged him in an acceptance speech.
Baena and Plaza tied the knot in 2021 in a low-key wedding, which Plaza had humorously described on The Drew Barrymore Show. The actress has not yet commented publicly on her decision to skip the event.
Our condolences go out to Aubrey Plaza and all who knew and loved Jeff Baena.
