Alec Baldwin Sues Prosecutors Over "Rust" Shooting Case

Alec Baldwin is firing back against prosecutors and investigators involved in the "Rust" shooting case, filing a lawsuit in New Mexico on Thursday. The actor, who is no longer facing charges related to the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, is accusing officials of malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and violating his civil rights.

Baldwin’s legal team claims prosecutors were determined to convict him despite a lack of evidence, pointing to the dismissal of the case in July as proof of their misconduct. The charges were dropped after it was discovered that key evidence had been filed under a different case number, effectively concealing it from Baldwin's defense team.

The lawsuit names Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, and members of the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office as defendants.

While Baldwin is seeking damages, his lawyers stress that no legal decision can undo the emotional toll caused by the State’s threat of imprisonment.

The tragic incident occurred on the set of "Rust" in 2021, when a gun Baldwin was holding discharged, fatally wounding Hutchins. The case saw numerous legal twists, including multiple appeals by prosecutors, before they ultimately dropped their efforts in December.

Requests for comment from the defendants have not yet been answered.
