Adams admitted that, during his seven years on Suits, he was in a tough mental space. He described himself as living an "unexamined life" and feeling "pretty miserable" and "pretty depressed." He acknowledged that he wasn’t taking care of his mental health, which led to him relying on alcohol as a coping mechanism.
By the end of the seventh season, Adams had developed an unhealthy relationship with drinking, using it to mask his emotions and deal with insecurities. He also mentioned that he was spending money in unhealthy ways, but didn’t take the steps to address these issues, such as seeking therapy.
Leaving Suits in 2018 didn’t immediately resolve his struggles, and Adams continued to face personal challenges. However, the turning point came when he realized how his behavior was affecting his relationship with his wife, actress Troian Bellisario, and their children. Trying to hold on to the carefree attitude of his twenties while dealing with insecurities was taking a toll on his family life.
The realization that he didn’t want to be an absent father pushed him to make a major change. “I think I should stop drinking probably, because I don’t wanna be that dad,” he said, marking the moment he decided to quit alcohol.
Since then, Adams has experienced a positive transformation. He now sees his decision to get sober as the best one he could have made, allowing him to address his mental health and be more present for his family.
