Kate Winslet Opens Up About Confronting Body Shaming After Titanic Success

Kate Winslet became emotional during a recent interview with "60 Minutes" as she recalled confronting the media over body shaming she endured after the success of Titanic. The Oscar-winning actress, who became a global star thanks to the 1997 blockbuster, has been open about the intense bullying she faced due to her weight.

In the interview, a clip from an E! Entertainment segment was shown where a host cruelly commented on Winslet’s appearance, suggesting she needed a larger dress size during the awards season following Titanic's release. "It’s absolutely appalling," Winslet responded, visibly upset. "What kind of person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?"

When asked if she ever confronted the press, Winslet shared that she did, saying, “I let them have it. I said, ‘I hope this haunts you.’” She described the moment as empowering, not just for her, but for all those who had experienced similar harassment. "It was horrific," she admitted, reflecting on the abuse she faced during those years.

Winslet also opened up about her early acting career, revealing in a 2022 interview with The Sunday Times that she was told to settle for “fat girl” roles while in acting school. After Titanic, the body shaming intensified. The actress recalled how viewers used the movie’s iconic ending to mock her weight, with cruel jokes about whether her character Rose was “too fat” to share the door with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack in the icy waters.

Reflecting on those years, Winslet recalled how difficult it was to navigate her changing body as a young woman, feeling insecure and terrified. “That’s bullying, you know, and actually borderline abusive,” she said, describing the relentless criticism she faced.

The body shaming continued for years, and in an earlier interview with Variety, Winslet admitted it was an ongoing struggle. Despite the pain, she has since used her platform to speak out against the harmful treatment she experienced, advocating for a kinder and more respectful environment for women in the industry.
