Jay-Z's Lawyer Pushes to Dismiss Rape Lawsuit, Citing Legal Issues

Jay-Z’s legal team is working to have a rape lawsuit against the rapper dismissed, claiming several issues with the case. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, argues that the legal grounds for the lawsuit don’t hold up.

The lawsuit, filed by a woman referred to as "Jane Doe," alleges that Jay-Z and Sean "Diddy" Combs sexually assaulted her at an MTV Video Music Awards after-party in 2000. Spiro points out that the law under which Jane Doe is suing didn’t go into effect until December 2000, three months after the alleged incident. He claims it cannot be applied retroactively to Jay-Z.

Furthermore, Spiro contends that the law only applies to incidents within New York City limits. Jane Doe reportedly described the alleged assault as taking place at a gated, white residence 20 minutes from Radio City Music Hall. Spiro argues that such a location, if it existed, would fall outside New York City’s jurisdiction.

The attorney also claims that any potential legal claims Jane Doe might have had expired in August 2021, further supporting his motion to dismiss.

Jane Doe’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, responded to the defense’s arguments, stating, “These are technical arguments, but the law is clearly on our side and supports alleged victims. We are confident in our case.”

As both sides prepare for the next legal steps, Jay-Z’s team is making it clear they aim to have the case thrown out entirely.
