Despite these struggles, Pugh has achieved great success. She made her film debut in 2014 with The Falling and went on to star in hit films like Midsommar, Black Widow, Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, and Little Women, for which she earned an Oscar nomination.
Pugh has also been outspoken about how women in the spotlight are often scrutinized for their appearance. She recalled moments when she felt underrepresented in the industry, pointing to cruel headlines about actresses like Keira Knightley being criticized for their body image. "The only thing people want to talk about is some useless crap about how they look," Pugh said, adding that she chose not to follow those beauty standards.
The actress also recalled being told early in her career to lose weight and change her appearance, an experience she described in a 2022 interview. In 2019, she pushed back against a film review that criticized her "chunky thighs."
"I wasn't trying to challenge; I just wanted to be there, to make space for a version of a person that isn’t all the things they used to have to be," Pugh explained. "I’m proud I’ve stuck by myself and look the way I look."
Pugh emphasized her commitment to making a difference for future generations of women in the industry. "I can certainly help young women coming into this industry by making conversations happen where they weren’t before," she said.
