Elton John Condemns Marijuana Legalization, Reflects on Sobriety Journey

Elton John has voiced his disapproval of marijuana legalization, citing personal experiences and its potential risks. The singer, sober since 1990, shared his views during his TIME Icon of the Year profile, calling marijuana "addictive" and a gateway to other drugs. He described the decision to legalize it in America and Canada as "one of the greatest mistakes of all time."

Reflecting on his past, John recounted how drug use negatively impacted his life and judgment, leading to poor decisions and strained relationships. He admitted to being controlling in relationships, saying his desperation for love caused harm to others. “I was being an a**hole,” he confessed, acknowledging the difficulty addicts face in recognizing and accepting their behavior.

John credited his journey to sobriety to key influences, including Alcoholics Anonymous, owning Watford Football Club, and meeting Ryan White, an HIV-positive teenager whose funeral became a turning point for him.

The musician also spoke of a higher power that guided him through his struggles with drugs, depression, and loneliness. While he does not believe in a biblical God, John shared that this faith has been instrumental in his recovery and personal growth.
