Billie Eilish Opens Up About Struggles with Social Media and Mental Health

Billie Eilish, the Grammy and Oscar-winning artist, recently opened up about her complicated relationship with social media. In an interview with Complex, the singer-songwriter shared how her experiences with platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become increasingly challenging. While she values the ability to connect with her fans, she has also acknowledged the negative impact social media has on her mental health.

Eilish revealed that she stepped back from social media in recent months, even leaving platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok. "Yeah, I’m off that shit," she said, describing the decision as freeing. Despite this, the pressure to stay connected with fans, especially while touring, makes it difficult for her to fully disconnect.

Currently on a world tour supporting her latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, Eilish explained how social media plays a role in her interaction with fans. She enjoys seeing videos of her performances and getting insights into how her audience feels about the shows. However, this desire to stay engaged often leads her back into the social media world, creating a cycle that she likened to addiction. "It’s like cigarettes," she admitted, sharing how she gets drawn in and struggles to pull herself away.

While Eilish appreciates certain aspects of social media, such as hosting Q&A sessions with fans, she also recognizes the challenges it brings. She expressed sadness that some individuals ruin the experience for others, making it harder to fully enjoy the connection social media can offer.

This is not the first time the artist has shared her struggles with social media. In a 2021 conversation with British rapper Stormzy for i-D magazine, Eilish discussed the tension between wanting to maintain her privacy and her desire to connect with her fans. She reflected on the difficulty of balancing these opposing feelings, explaining that while she doesn’t want to reveal every detail of her life, she also wants to make others feel seen and understood.

Eilish’s decision to step away from social media reflects her ongoing efforts to prioritize her mental health while navigating the complexities of fame and online engagement.
