Young Thug Sentenced to 15 Years of Probation, Potentially Avoiding Prison Time

Young Thug could soon be back home after receiving a sentence that may allow him to avoid further time in prison. On Thursday, Judge Whitaker handed down a 40-year sentence, but the rapper was credited with five years already served and will only have to complete 15 years of probation.

The situation is a bit complex. While there's also a potential 20-year prison sentence attached, Thug will only face that if he fails to successfully complete his probation. If he stays out of trouble, this portion of his sentence could be reduced.

Young Thug's attorney, Brian Steel, has asked the court to permit him to maintain connections with co-defendants, including his brother Quantavious "Unfoonk" Grier and Sergio "Gunna" Kitchens, to support his music career.

Despite the state initially seeking a 25-year prison sentence, the judge took a different route. Young Thug opted to enter a guilty plea in his YSL RICO case, bringing an end to what has been Georgia's longest trial.

On Halloween 2024, Thug changed his earlier plea from 2022, admitting to involvement in criminal street gang activity. He also pleaded no contest to conspiracy to violate the RICO Act and leading a criminal street gang. Prosecutors had recommended a harsher 45-year sentence, which would consist of 25 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation.

While two of Thug's co-defendants, Yak Gotti and Shannon Stillwell (also known as SB), have rejected plea deals and will continue their trials, three others accepted plea agreements earlier in the week.

The trial, known for its many dramatic moments, included a defendant allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs in court and claims that Thug sent messages to his girlfriend, Mariah The Scientist, through his clothing choices. With his plea, Young Thug's role in this high-profile case is now coming to a close.
