Renowned Russian Ballet Star Vladimir Shklyarov Dies in Tragic Balcony Fall

Renowned Russian ballet star Vladimir Shklyarov tragically died after falling from a fifth-floor balcony in St. Petersburg on Saturday. The 39-year-old dancer, celebrated as the highest-ranking artist at the Mariinsky Theatre, was mourned by the institution, which called his death a monumental loss.

According to Russian state media, Shklyarov reportedly stepped out onto the balcony to smoke and lost his balance on the narrow ledge. His death occurred just two days before he was scheduled to undergo complex spinal surgery. Reports indicate he had been on strong painkillers leading up to the tragedy.

Tributes poured in from the global ballet community. Diana Vishneva, a principal dancer at the Mariinsky Theatre, remembered Shklyarov in an emotional social media post, describing him as a favorite partner for countless ballerinas. Shklyarov’s artistry and dedication to his craft earned him the title of Honored Artist of Russia in 2020. A graduate of the prestigious Vaganova Academy, he shone in productions like Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Romeo and Juliet.

Beyond his talent, Shklyarov was an outspoken advocate for peace, voicing his opposition to Russia's war with Ukraine. He is survived by his wife, fellow Mariinsky dancer Maria Shirinkina, and their two children.
