Silvia Pinal, Iconic Star of Mexico’s Golden Age, Dies at 93

Silvia Pinal, a celebrated actress from Mexico’s Golden Age of cinema, has passed away at the age of 93. Known for her illustrious 60-year career, Pinal starred alongside icons like Cantinflas, Tin Tan, and Pedro Infante. She gained international acclaim through her roles in Luis Buñuel’s classic films Viridiana (1961), The Exterminating Angel (1962), and Simon of the Desert (1965).

Pinal was one of the few stars of her era to transition successfully into television during the 1960s as the Mexican film industry declined. She later ventured into producing and even served as a congresswoman, leaving a lasting mark on both the arts and public service.

Earlier this month, her family revealed she had been hospitalized due to a urinary tract infection. Her death was confirmed by Mexico’s Culture Secretary, Claudia Curiel de Icaza, who paid tribute by saying, “Her legacy as an artist and her contributions to our culture are unforgettable. Rest in peace.”

Silvia Pinal is survived by her ex-husband Enrique Guzmán, and her daughters, actress Sylvia Pasquel and rock singer Alejandra Guzmán. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
