Rupert Grint Ordered to Pay £1.8M in Tax After Losing Legal Battle

Rupert Grint, best known as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, has been ordered to pay £1.8 million in taxes after losing a legal dispute with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). The 36-year-old actor had challenged a 2019 HMRC ruling that categorized a £4.5 million payment he received in 2011-2012 as income rather than a capital asset. Grint argued the sum, linked to his business earnings, should be taxed at the 10% capital gains rate instead of the higher 52% income tax and national insurance rate.

The tax tribunal judge, Harriet Morgan, dismissed Grint’s appeal, stating the money was substantially derived from his professional activities and should be taxed as income. This ruling marks another setback for Grint, who lost a separate case in 2019 involving a £1 million tax refund.

Grint starred in all eight Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011. Post-Potter, he has appeared in movies like Into the White and Knock at the Cabin, as well as on stage and in television projects, including his role in the Apple TV series Servant.
