Describing the emotional toll, Nicole said, “It’s a wake-up-at-3 a.m. crying and gasping kind of thing. If you’re in it and not numbing yourself to it. And I’m in it. Fully in it.”
As a mother to two teenage daughters, Sunday, 16, and Faith, 13, whom she shares with husband Keith Urban, Nicole revealed how these experiences have intensified her reflections on life and mortality. “It’s all about connection, loss, and raising children while navigating the challenges of marriage,” she shared. “All of it makes you a fully sentient human.”
Nicole’s grief was heightened when her mother passed just as she was preparing for a Venice Film Festival appearance for her new film Babygirl. Director Halina Reijn read a letter on Nicole’s behalf during the festival, in which the actress described her mother as “beautiful” and “brave.”
In a Vanity Fair interview, Nicole remembered her mother as a guiding light. “She was my compass,” she said. “So much of what she wanted was for my sister and me to become women who could express ourselves and seize opportunities she didn’t have.”
Despite her mother’s excitement about Nicole’s latest projects, Babygirl and Perfect Couple, she didn’t live to see them. At the Los Angeles premiere of Lioness Season 2 in October, Nicole admitted, “I wish my mama was here. Everything is great with work, but I wish my mama was here.”
Through her grief, Nicole remains focused on honoring her mother’s legacy, cherishing her family, and embracing every moment of life’s journey.
