Kelly Marie Tran Opens Up About Her Queer Identity Ahead of The Wedding Banquet Release

Kelly Marie Tran recently came out as queer in a heartfelt interview with Vanity Fair ahead of the release of her new film, The Wedding Banquet. Tran shared that this is the first time she's publicly acknowledged her sexuality, saying, “I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I’m a queer person.”

Tran’s excitement about the project lies in the fact that her role felt deeply personal. Portraying a character named Angela, she said she didn’t feel like she was acting at all. She was thrilled to work on a film where she felt truly accepted, especially in a “queer space,” which was something she had never experienced before.

In The Wedding Banquet, a remake of the 1993 classic, Tran’s character attempts to have a baby through IVF with her partner Lee, played by Lily Gladstone. The storyline follows Angela as she plans a fake traditional Korean wedding to help raise funds for IVF and secure a green card for her male friend.

Tran also reflected on her personal coming-out experience, noting that the scenes she shared with co-star Joan Chen mirrored her own journey with her mother. Director Andrew Ahn, who drew inspiration from his own experiences, said the film was designed to be a reflection of the queer community. He added, “The spirit is the same, and I think it’s even more queer.”

Fans can look forward to seeing The Wedding Banquet when it hits theaters in the spring.
