Tran discussed her role in the film, directed by queer filmmaker Andrew Ahn, and explained how playing a character like Angela, who is navigating a queer experience, felt deeply personal to her. She shared that the experience didn’t feel like acting, adding, “I don’t feel like I’m acting at all in this movie.”
The film features a star-studded cast, including Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, and Yuh-Jung Youn. It follows Angela, who is trying to have a baby with her girlfriend Lee, played by Gladstone. They come up with a plan to hold a fake wedding to secure a green card for one of their friends while raising funds for IVF treatment. Tran also shared that filming emotional scenes with Joan Chen, who plays her character’s mother in the movie, reflected her own coming-out experience with her own mom.
Tran has long supported LGBTQ+ representation and has previously expressed that she believes her character in Raya and the Last Dragon is queer. She even voiced her desire for a queer sequel, stating that authentic representation in media is vital for audiences to connect.
