Josh Brolin Reveals Childhood Secrets and Struggles in New Memoir From Under the Truck

Josh Brolin opens up about his tumultuous childhood and complex relationship with his mother, Jane, in his new memoir, From Under the Truck. In an interview with The Times, the actor shared startling memories, including his mother’s unusual and frightening antics. Jane, a wildlife conservationist, would yell “Sic ’em” at wild animals like cougars and coyotes, often sending them chasing after Josh and his brother, Jess.

"You knew if you didn’t get on the other side of that shut door within a couple of seconds, you’d be dealing with bloody marks on your body," Brolin recounts in the book. Despite the terror of these moments, he describes his mother as someone who, while difficult, was always a vibrant presence.

Jane tragically died in a car accident in 1995 at the age of 55. At the time, Brolin, struggling with heroin addiction, believed 55 was a long life. Now 56 and sober, he reflects on how misguided that perspective was, admitting it took years to overcome his struggles with substance abuse.
