John Oliver Slams Matt Gaetz’s Nomination as Attorney General: “Worst in History”

John Oliver used his Sunday show to target President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet picks, describing them as deeply problematic, even by Trump’s standards. His sharpest criticisms were reserved for former Rep. Matt Gaetz, Trump’s nominee for attorney general.

Gaetz, once investigated in a federal sex trafficking case involving a 17-year-old—though charges were never filed—was also under scrutiny by the House Ethics Committee until his recent resignation. Oliver joked about Gaetz's high school superlative, claiming he would have been voted “most likely to not be allowed within 500 feet of here.”

The comedian shared a montage of conservatives criticizing Gaetz, including former national security adviser John Bolton, who declared the nomination “the worst in American history.” Oliver agreed, predicting a series of historically bad moments under Trump’s administration, joking that even the White House Easter egg roll would be disastrous, complete with flaming Easter Bunnies and spoiled eggs.

One Republican lawmaker’s response to Gaetz’s nomination—“are you shittin’ me?”—earned Oliver’s approval as the only suitable reaction. He wrapped up his critique with a biting remark, refusing to compare Gaetz to Jeffrey Epstein “if he went to shittier beaches,” on his lawyers’ advice.
