“They owe me,” Smith joked, recalling how he helped save their 1997 film Good Will Hunting. He confidently added, “Expect more than just cameos from them. We can’t make a Dogma sequel without them.”
The original film follows Affleck and Damon’s characters as they search for a loophole to return to heaven. The ensemble cast also included Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Alanis Morissette, and Smith himself as Silent Bob alongside Jason Mewes as Jay.
Recently, Dogma was reacquired from Miramax by a new distributor, allowing the film to return to theaters and potentially stream for the first time. Smith hinted that this deal could pave the way for not just a sequel but also spin-offs or TV adaptations.
Smith has been vocal about distancing himself from Harvey Weinstein, the film’s original producer, following allegations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein in 2017. At the time, Smith pledged to donate all residuals from his Miramax projects to Women in Film and rejected an offer from Weinstein to make Dogma 2.
The Dogma sequel would mark another installment in Smith’s View Askewniverse, which includes films like Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. Fans of the franchise can look forward to seeing familiar faces and a continuation of the story that balances satire with spirituality.
