Cher Reveals Sonny Bono Took Control of Her Finances in New Memoir

Cher has revealed that her former husband, Sonny Bono, took control of her finances during their marriage, leaving her unaware of her true financial situation. In an interview with The New York Times discussing the first volume of her memoir, the 78-year-old music icon shared, “He took all my money.” She admitted to trusting Bono implicitly at the time, believing their assets were shared equally.

Reflecting on the betrayal, Cher expressed her lingering disbelief. “To this day, I wish I could ask, ‘Son, at what point did you decide to take my money?’” she said.

Cher was only 16 when she met Bono, who was 27 at the time. They married in 1964, became a legendary musical duo, and divorced in 1975. Bono tragically passed away in 1998 in a skiing accident. In her memoir, Cher also reveals how Bono restricted her social life, even barring her from spending time with their band members.

Despite the challenges, Cher continues to defy expectations in her career. She still works with her 96-year-old vocal coach, saying, “You’re not really supposed to be able to sing at this age, but I’ve been singing my whole life.” Writing the memoir, however, took a toll. “It exhausted me,” she admitted. Fans can look forward to the second part of her memoir, set for release in 2025.
