Zoe Saldana Reflects on Gamora Role, Wishes for MCU Reshoots

Zoe Saldana recently reflected on her portrayal of Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), revealing a wish to revisit the role with a fresh perspective. In an interview with Variety, the Avatar star, who was recently praised for her role in Emilia Perez, shared that she now has a deeper understanding of Gamora and would approach the character differently if given the chance.

Saldana admitted that, during her time in the MCU, she didn’t fully grasp the vision the Russo Brothers had for Gamora. She expressed a desire to push herself further in exploring the complicated relationship between Gamora and her father, Thanos. She described it as a missed opportunity to dive deeper into the character’s emotional struggles, especially as a daughter dealing with a challenging father figure.

Gamora, adopted by Thanos, plays a major role in the MCU's Infinity Saga. While she sought her father’s approval, she secretly opposed him and even concealed the location of the Soul Stone, fearing its potential destruction. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos sacrifices Gamora to obtain the Soul Stone, despite his love for her. However, Saldana returned in Avengers: Endgame as an alternate-timeline version of Gamora, who fights alongside the Avengers in their final battle against Thanos.

Saldana was last seen as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. Outside of the MCU, she starred in Emilia Perez, a film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to great acclaim, receiving a standing ovation. The movie also features Selena Gomez, Karla Sofia Gascon, and Edgar Ramirez.
