“We were unceremoniously let go in a way that felt mean and unjust,” Drew revealed, reflecting on the overwhelming response from fans. “The outpouring of love was so enormous, it felt like watching people eulogize you.” The actress had been with the show since 2009, and her exit came as a shock to both her and her devoted followers.
Back in 2018, shortly after news of her departure broke, Drew took to social media to express her feelings. “I know you’re sad. I’m sad too,” she wrote, acknowledging how difficult it was to process the news. At the time, she wasn’t ready to sum up her nine-year journey on the show, having had less than 48 hours to absorb the reality.
Despite the sudden exit, Drew has returned to Grey’s Anatomy as a guest star in Seasons 17 and 18. Reflecting on those experiences, she shared on the podcast that stepping back into April’s shoes felt “freeing.” Without the pressure of being a series regular, Drew said, “I had zero anxiety going back. I don’t need anything from anyone on that set anymore. They’re not responsible for my livelihood or my success.”
The podcast also revealed some juicy behind-the-scenes details about the development of April’s character. Drew mentioned that in Season 7, April was originally supposed to have a one-night stand with Dr. Mark Sloan, played by Eric Dane. “Before they made my character a virgin who loves Jesus, there was a scene where Sloan and Reed had sex. That was supposed to be me,” she explained, laughing about how things changed in the original script.
Looking back, Drew seems at peace with her journey on Grey’s Anatomy and has found a new perspective on her time there. For her, the experience now feels more like a fun visit rather than a crucial part of her career.
