Tragic Passing of Musician Nell Smith at Age 17

Nell Smith, a talented musician known for her album of Nick Cave covers with The Flaming Lips, has tragically passed away at the age of 17. Her family announced the news on her official Instagram account, expressing their heartbreak and gratitude for the time they shared with her. They described Smith as a "feisty, talented, unique, beautiful daughter" who left a significant impact on the world and a profound void in their hearts.

Smith's journey in music began after she met Wayne Coyne, the frontman of The Flaming Lips, at a concert in Calgary in 2018. Their friendship blossomed as she learned guitar and started writing songs, eventually leading to their collaboration on the covers album, Where the Viaduct Looms, released when she was just 14.

Coyne honored Smith during a performance in Portland, sharing the heartbreaking news of her death in a car accident and highlighting the importance of music and love in times of grief. Simon Raymonde from the Cocteau Twins also expressed sorrow, noting that Smith was working on her debut solo album, set for release in early 2025 through Bella Union.

Raymonde shared that the Bella Union family is devastated by her sudden loss and requested privacy for Smith's grieving family as they cope with this tragedy.
