Jelly Roll Reflects on His Past and Seeks Forgiveness for His Actions as a Teen

Country and hip-hop artist Jelly Roll, born Jason Bradley DeFord, is opening up about his past and the responsibilities he feels towards his actions as a teenager. After spending years in and out of jail, including a significant sentence for armed robbery at the age of 15, he is now dedicated to making amends and using his music to inspire change.

On the podcast "On Purpose With Jay Shetty," Jelly Roll faced a tough question: what would he say to the person he robbed? Reflecting on this pivotal moment from his life, he admitted that it's a question he's often avoided. “That’s the best question I’ve ever been asked,” he said. “I don’t know how to answer it.” He acknowledged that 24 years have passed since the incident, and he sometimes wonders if his victim is aware of his success today.

Jelly Roll humorously noted that he was just a kid at the time, joking that he "hardly hit puberty." He revealed that his robbery victim is on his "amends list," and while he hasn’t reached out yet, he plans to do so. He expressed a deep sense of accountability for his actions, saying, “No matter how old I was, I had no business taking from anybody.” He emphasized the misguided entitlement he felt back then, describing it as a “horrible way to look at life.”

He reflected on the illogical nature of his past decisions, admitting that he can’t make sense of why he acted the way he did. “I learned so much from it,” he explained. Jelly Roll sees his mission as not just personal growth but also representing those who feel unheard or marginalized.

Taking his platform seriously, Jelly Roll has been active in giving back to his community. Ahead of a concert in Columbus, Ohio, he visited the Franklin County Juvenile Intervention Center to share his story with young people facing similar challenges. He hopes to show them that change is possible and that he is committed to proving himself worthy of the responsibility he feels now.

As Jelly Roll continues to evolve as an artist, he remains hopeful for forgiveness from those he has wronged. “I hope they would see that I’m representing change,” he said, concluding with a heartfelt message about the importance of accountability and grace in the journey of life.
