Qualls explained that he didn't publicly come out until 2015 because he didn’t want to confront the homophobic comments he often heard on set. He described the discomfort of listening to such remarks while simply trying to enjoy his day. He chose to privately inform coworkers of his sexuality, emphasizing that he wanted respect in his workplace.
In 2020, Qualls officially came out on The Jim Jefferies Show and confirmed it on social media, stating, "Yep, I’m gay. Been gay this whole time." He expressed relief at no longer worrying about others' opinions or the potential impact on his career.
Qualls is known for his roles in films like Road Trip and The Core, as well as his appearances in popular TV shows such as Breaking Bad and Scrubs. He particularly connected his character Garth Fitzgerald from Supernatural with his coming-out journey, noting that both faced feelings of being different.
He recently announced his engagement to fellow Supernatural actor Ty Olsson, whom he met at a fan convention. Qualls hopes his story encourages others to embrace their true selves.
