Anna Kendrick Opens Up About Seven-Year Abusive Relationship

Anna Kendrick has opened up about her experience in a seven-year abusive relationship during a candid conversation on the Call Her Daddy podcast. Speaking to host Alex Cooper on the Oct. 23 episode, the 39-year-old actress revealed that it took her a while to recognize the abuse because it didn’t follow the typical patterns she had read about.

Kendrick shared that the relationship changed suddenly and drastically, lasting for about a year before the eventual breakup. Reflecting on that time, she admitted she thought she was the problem and even tried to fix herself, believing she was "crazy." The split occurred just before she began filming her 2022 movie Alice, Darling, which focuses on emotional abuse.

During couples therapy, Kendrick’s ex was initially supported by their therapist. However, after Kendrick had an emotional outburst in one session, the therapist later apologized, acknowledging that he had misunderstood the situation. Kendrick said the relationship ended shortly afterward.

She also recalled a moment when her ex accused her of "terrorizing" him after she began crying, no longer able to hide her emotions. Despite her tears, Kendrick said he genuinely believed he was the victim.

While promoting Alice, Darling at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, Kendrick revealed the film's emotional abuse storyline mirrored her own life, though she had kept the connection to herself at the time because the breakup was still fresh.
