Garfield recalled that as the scene progressed, both he and Pugh realized the take was lasting longer than expected. “At a certain point, we’re both telepathically saying to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a longer take,’” he said, humorously describing how their cinematographer, Stuart Bentley, had turned away with the camera by his side.
Pugh previously praised director John Crawley for creating a safe environment during filming. She noted how essential that was for both actors to fully engage with Nick Payne’s emotional script.
We Live in Time is set to be released on October 11 via A24. Pugh plays an up-and-coming chef whose life takes a dramatic turn after meeting a recent divorcée, portrayed by Garfield. Their story evolves into a deeply emotional, decade-spanning romance, eventually confronting the couple with a life-changing diagnosis.
The film’s cast also includes Adam James, Marama Corlett, and Aoife Hinds, among others. It was produced by StudioCanal, with Benedict Cumberbatch serving as executive producer. Filming took place in London in April 2023.
