Machine Gun Kelly's Sobriety Journey: A Path to Self-Discovery and Fatherhood

Machine Gun Kelly, also known as Colson Baker, has shared insights into his journey to sobriety, emphasizing the importance of a mindset shift. Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of the 2024 People's Choice Country Awards, where he is both a nominee and a performer, Kelly revealed that he approached his recovery by looking at his life from a holistic perspective.

Reflecting on his birth date, the rapper noted, "I was born on the 22nd. Twenty-two is a master number. What am I here to master?" He acknowledged the generational issues he faced, saying, "What were my generational curses and problems that were passed down to me and to my father?"

Kelly expressed that his path to sobriety is driven by his desire to be a good man and a loving father. "I have a daughter who I love with all of my heart and would die for," he said. "I’m not in a haze anymore to not realize that." He highlighted the importance of personal accountability in his recovery journey, stating, "I can punish myself today so that I can forgive myself tomorrow."

In an earlier appearance on Bunnie Xo's podcast, Kelly revealed that he is completely sober, having not consumed alcohol since August of the previous year. He admitted to struggling with alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs like hydrocodone and Percocet. His partner, Megan Fox, has played a significant role in his recovery, helping him navigate the psychological challenges associated with withdrawal.

Kelly also shared a pivotal moment that prompted his decision to get sober. He recalled a conversation with his 15-year-old daughter, Casie, who expressed awareness of his drug use when she was around 11 or 12. "As a father and as a man, to be the father I wish my dad would have been, I have to break this generational curse for my kid," he explained.

Through his journey, Machine Gun Kelly is not only seeking personal transformation but is also focused on being a positive role model for his daughter and breaking the cycle of addiction within his family.
