Kathryn Hahn Makes Marvel History in 'Agatha All Along' Premiere

On Wednesday, the premiere of “Agatha All Along,” Marvel Television’s sequel to “WandaVision,” showcased Kathryn Hahn in a groundbreaking role. Hahn made Marvel history by being the first woman to show her bare butt in a Marvel Studios project. This move is particularly notable given that Marvel has previously featured male nudity, such as the Hulk in “Thor: Ragnarok” and Thor in “Thor: Love and Thunder.”

Hahn explained to Variety that the decision to go bare was intentional. “I thought it was good to see her as stripped down, literally, as we possibly could, which spoke into her powerlessness at the present moment,” she said. The series follows Agatha Harkness, who is aided by a goth character named Teen (played by Joe Locke) to break free from the spell cast by the Scarlet Witch at the end of “WandaVision.” This spell had trapped Agatha in a TV universe in Westview. To regain her reality, she must shed her past personas, literally emerging from the spell nude, with only her hair covering her.

“She’s been stripped of all of her power at this point in the series,” Hahn noted. The narrative focuses on her journey from vulnerability to reclaiming her strength. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer revealed that Hahn improvised a key moment in the script. While Agatha was originally meant to grab a robe before stepping outside, Hahn felt her character wouldn’t care about being naked in front of her neighbors. Schaeffer praised this choice, calling it “the greatest idea I’ve ever heard.”

The scene was filmed with careful camera placement to ensure Hahn's nudity was tastefully covered, with her hair providing strategic coverage. In the scene, Agatha interacts with her neighbor, John (David A. Payton), who humorously points out her nudity as she realizes she’s been imprisoned by Wanda. Ultimately, she retreats inside to put on her robe and strategize her escape.

“It is so true to her character, and it makes me laugh out loud,” Schaeffer said, highlighting the combination of humor and character depth in the series. Hahn’s performance not only marks a significant moment in the MCU but also emphasizes her skill and versatility as an actress.
