John David Ashton, the beloved actor best known for his role as the tough, by-the-book detective in the "Beverly Hills Cop" series, has passed away at the age of 76. According to reports from TMZ, he died peacefully on Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado, after a courageous battle with cancer.

With a remarkable career spanning over 50 years in Hollywood, John appeared in more than 200 film, TV, and stage productions. He rose to fame in 1984 when he co-starred with a young Eddie Murphy in the iconic "Beverly Hills Cop." John played Detective Sergeant John Taggart, a character known for his straight-laced demeanor and sharp wit, often balancing Murphy’s energetic antics alongside Judge Reinhold, who portrayed his lovable partner, Detective Billy Rosewood.

Ashton reprised his role in three of the four "Beverly Hills Cop" films, including the most recent installment released on Netflix earlier this year, which received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. His versatility also shone through in other memorable roles, including appearances in the classic series "M*A*S*H" and as Eric Stoltz’s father in John Hughes' "Some Kind of Wonderful." In 1988, he showcased his comedic chops alongside Robert De Niro in the action-comedy "Midnight Run."

In addition to his film career, John recently co-hosted "The Ashton and Davis Show" on 870 ESPN Radio, where his engaging personality and love for storytelling resonated with listeners.

John's representative, Alan Somers, shared a heartfelt statement, saying, "John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, children, grandchildren, as well as his brother, sisters, his extended family, and all who loved him. John’s impact on the world will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come."

In honor of John’s memory, his family has requested that any donations be made to Pathways Hospice Care. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his contributions to film and television will continue to be cherished.
