Elizabeth Olsen Opens Up About Challenges of Filming Marvel's CGI Scenes

Elizabeth Olsen has shared her thoughts on the challenges of working in Marvel films, particularly in roles that heavily rely on visual effects. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Olsen expressed frustration with acting in front of a green screen, especially as her character, Scarlet Witch, is brought to life through CGI. She explained how strange it feels to perform movements that will later be enhanced with visual effects, comparing it to playing make-believe as a child. Olsen suggested that Marvel should release a version of one of its films without any special effects, so viewers can better understand the effort it takes for actors to perform in these conditions.

For characters like Scarlet Witch or Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn, much of their on-screen magic comes from CGI, leaving the actors to rely solely on imagination during filming. Even major Marvel stars like Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, must act out scenes involving powers that are added later through digital effects. Olsen also revealed that while promoting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she had never met co-star John Krasinski, despite sharing a scene with him, further highlighting the disjointed nature of filming with visual effects.

Though Olsen hasn’t officially returned as Scarlet Witch, Marvel fans were given a subtle nod in Agatha All Along, where Agatha Harkness finds Wanda Maximoff’s body, hinting at her possible death. While Wanda’s return remains uncertain, her involvement in the first episode has sparked speculation that she might appear later in the series. For now, fans can catch Olsen’s last appearance as Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, streaming on Disney+.
