In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell discussed the challenges of portraying a New York gangster. He revealed that his dialect coach, Jessica Drake, played a crucial role in perfecting the accent. Drake, who has an extensive library of accents from various periods, helped Farrell choose an accent that suited his character’s background. They settled on an accent reflective of a middle-aged apartment manager from the 1980s, a choice that resonated both energetically and phonetically.
Farrell shared an interesting technique for maintaining the accent during dialogue. Whenever his accent faltered, he would use the phrase "Gefilte fish," a quirky method that proved effective in keeping his accent consistent.
The series picks up after the events of The Batman, where Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot will strive to dominate Gotham’s criminal underworld. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc described The Penguin as more of a “grounded character drama” rather than a traditional supervillain story. The show will delve into the complexities of its characters, portraying them as flawed and multifaceted rather than clear-cut heroes or villains.
LeFranc also addressed speculation about a potential cameo from Robert Pattinson’s Batman, stating that it would overshadow Cobblepot’s storyline. The Penguin, featuring a cast that includes Cristin Milioti, Michael Kelly, and Rhenzy Feliz, is set to premiere on September 20 on Max.
